In this blog, we are going to cover how to run Oracle EBS (R12) on Oracle’s Cloud@Customer (C@C) on Gen2.
We have covered all the important points below:
1. Oracle Cloud@Customer is a way to use the complete public cloud infrastructure, including fully managed cloud services, and Oracle Fusion SaaS applications in your own data center.
Similar to Oracle Cloud@Customer, we have Outpost from AWS and Stack hub from Azure. To know more about Oracle Cloud@Customer, check our post from here.
2. During the early days, Oracle used to have Gen 1 Cloud aka OCI-Classic but nowadays Oracle uses Gen 2 Cloud which is known as OCI(Oracle Cloud Infrastructure). To know about the difference between OCI and OCI-C, check our post from here.
Note: In this post, we will talk about Gen2 Cloud@Customer.
3. Oracle EBS (R12) consists of three-tier architecture:
- Client Tier
- Application Tier (running Oracle Fusion Middleware i.e. WebLogic, OHS, Forms, Reports, Concurrent Manager etc)
- Database Tier
To know more about EBS (R12) Architecture, check our blog from here.
For EBS (R12) on Cloud@Customer, commonly Database Tier is on Exadata Cloud@Customer while retaining Application Tier on existing on-premises hardware.
4. EBS R12 has version 12.1 & 12.2 with Database Tier as 11g, 12c or 19c. Currently, as of May 2021 support for EBS (R12) on C@C is only for EBS R12.2 (12.2.3 or later) with DB version 12.1.0.2.
For the latest supported version refer to My Oracle Support (MOS) note 2774983.1 Getting Started with Oracle E-Business Suite on Exadata Cloud@Customer Gen 2.
5. Oracle Database from 12c onwards introduced multi-tenant Architecture (CDB/PDB). For the 12c Database version, you have an option to use CDB/PDB or Non-CDB features but with the 19c Database version, CDB with PDB is mandatory. For EBS (R12) Cloud@Customer 12c Database must be a multitenant container database (CDB) with a single pluggable database (PDB).
To know more about multi-tenant Architecture, check our blog from here.
6. For steps to migrate your Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2 with Oracle Database 12.1.0.2 to Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer Gen 2, refer to My Oracle Support Note 2758998.1
7. When Patching EBS Suite (R12.2) on Exadata, you have to patch different components
- EBS Application Tier Patching: Typically you patch EBS Apps Tier using ADOP. For EBS (R12) on C@C, you continue to use the same utility. To know more about ADOP, click here.
- EBS Technology Stack Patching: You patch WebLogic, OHS, Form/Report for technology stack patching. For EBS (R12) on C@C, you continue to use the same utility.
Refer to My Oracle Support Note 1355068.1 Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 Patching Technology Components Guide or download our patching guide for Oracle Apps DBAs covering notes related to ADOP, ADPATCH, OPATCH, BSU from here. - Database Tier Patching: When applying databases patches for Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer, you can apply interim (one-off) patches using OPatch; however, you must apply quarterly database patches using Oracle Cloud command-line utilities i.e. dbaascli
Refer to My Oracle Support Note: 2368508.1 Installing Database Patch Updates for Oracle E-Business Suite on an Exadata DB System in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure or Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer.
Note: Oracle E-Business Suite customers should not use OPatch or the Database Cloud Service Console to apply quarterly database patches when running on Exadata Cloud@Customer. - O.S. / Infrastructure Patching for Exadata C@C: As a part of infrastructure maintenance, there are:
-
- Customer Managed maintenance tasks that you need to look after like patching Exadata Compute Nodes.
- Oracle-Managed maintenance tasks like physical compute nodes (Dom0), network switches, power distribution units (PDUs), integrated lights-out management (ILOM) interfaces, and the Exadata Storage Servers. You need to schedule maintenance of these quarterly with Oracle.
To know more about O.S. / Infrastructure Patching for Exadata C@C, click here.
8. Oracle EBS (R12) on Oracle Cloud (OCI) can be provisioned, managed and migrated using EBS Cloud Manager but this EBS Cloud Manager is NOT available for EBS (R12) Cloud@Customer. To know more about EBS Cloud Manager, check our blog from here.
