EBS Cloud Manager is an essential tool to master if you want to migrate the EBS environment from on-prem to OCI. Here, you will learn the basic concepts of EBS Cloud Manager & its Deployment and what other migration options are available.
This Post will cover some quick tips including FAQs on the topics that we covered in the Day 2 live session which will help you get a clear understanding of EBS Cloud Manager.
First of all, there are 8 modules & 20+ step-by-step hands-on labs which are important to become EBS(R12) on Cloud Architect.
- Module 1: EBS On Cloud Architecture
- Module 2: OCI Concepts For Apps DBAs
- Module 3: Networking For Cloud Apps DBAs
- Module 4: EBS Cloud Manager & Provisioning
- Module 5: Managing EBS CM & Cloning
- Module 6: Migration (Lift & Shift)
- Module 7: EBS HA & DR on OCI
- Module 8: Project Work Experience
In the previous week sessions, on Day 1 we covered Cloud Concepts, EBS(R12) on Cloud Architecture and Deployment Topologies. And in this week’s Day 2 Live Session of the Build, Manage & Migrate EBS R12 to Cloud For Beginners training program, we covered the concepts of EBS Cloud Manager and its Deployment and along with this, We also performed labs.
EBS (R12) on OCI FAQs: EBS Cloud Manager
Q1: What is an EBS Cloud Manager?
A: EBS Cloud Manager is an automation tool for Oracle E-Business Suite and is available on Oracle Cloud. It is used for many purposes like provisioning, migration of an on-prem instance, maintaining and cloning an existing instance.
EBS Cloud Manager is a tool that centrally manages all your EBS Environments on the Oracle Cloud (OCI).

Q2: Explain the IAM services used before setting up an EBS Cloud Manager?
A: The IAM services that are used to create an EBS Cloud Manager are:
- Compartments
- Groups
- Policies
- Users
Compartment: A compartment is a logical container, to organize and control access to the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Resources (Compute, Storage, Network, Load Balancer, etc) created within that compartment and you impose some policies to that compartment, which restricts who can use the resources created within than compartment other than administrators of your account.
Users and Groups: User is an individual or an employee who needs to manage different resources in OCI and every user belongs to single or multiple groups.
Policies: Policies are the statements that specify which user or group can access what resources in OCI. It also provides access to various services to use different services in OCI.

Q3: What components of VCN are used while deploying EBS Cloud Manager?
A: Below are the VCN components used while deploying EBS Cloud Manager:
- Subnets
- Gateways
- Routing Tables
- Security Lists/Groups
- Security Rules

Q4: Is there any template available on Oracle Cloud for EBS Cloud Manager?
A: Yes, image of EBS Cloud Manager is available on the OCI Marketplace which is free of cost and can be used to deploy an EBS Cloud Manager.
Q5: What are the benefits of using EBS Cloud Manager?
A: Benefits of using EBS Cloud Manager:
- Secure, with a load balancer that works as a TLS termination point.
- Deployed on a subnet that is not directly exposed to the end user’s network.
- Deploying Instances in Public/Private Deployments.
- Multiuser, allowing multiple DBAs to manage the same set of Oracle E-Business Suite environments.
- Fully integrated with Identity Cloud Service (IDCS) for authentication services.
- Lift and Shift with Reduced Down time.
Q6: What roles and tasks can de defined in EBS Cloud Manager?
A: There are multiple roles and tasks which are defined below:
- EBS Cloud Manager Administrator: Will manage EBS Cloud Manager account, users and everything related to the Cloud Manager.
- Network Administrator: Will manage and control the network resources and its access to various users.
- EBS Administrators: Will create & manage the Production, Dev, QA environment.

Q7: Why use both private and public subnet while deploying EBS Cloud Manager?
A: We deploy an EBS CM instance in a private subnet whereas the Cloud Manager Load Balancer stays in the public Subnet. It is one of the best practice while deploying an EBS Cloud manager as now the EBS cloud manager is not exposed to the public traffic and only the EBS load balancer is exposed which can then communicate with the Cloud Manager through designated ports.
To know more about Subnets, check our post here.
Q8: Which resources are deployed by Tenancy, Network, Cloud Manager and Applications Administrator?
A: Tenancy Administrator: Defines and creates the different compartments (Network compartment, EBSCM compartment, EBS Compartment) needed for the deployment (Refer to the below diagram).
Network Administrator: Creates network related components (VCN, Subnets, Route tables, Security lists, Gateways) in the network compartment. Regional subnets are preferred over AD specific (Refer to the below diagram).
Cloud Manager Administrator: Deploys the Cloud Manager and configure the network profile while using the network resources created by Network Administrator (Refer to the below diagram).
Application Administrator: Does the provisioning of EBS instances, maintains it while leveraging the network profiles (Refer to the below diagram).
Q9: Can we migrate EBS from on-prem to OCI without using EBS Cloud Manager?
A: Yes, You can migrate EBS from on-prem to OCI without using EBS Cloud Manager.
You can use:
- Backup & Restore as you do for normal clone
- Physical Standby Databases: If source is Linux
- Transportable Tablespaces: If source is not Linux
Check out below Oracle docs for using transportable tablespace with EBS R12:
