In this blog, we are going to look at the Roles of Oracle Apps DBA in the Cloud or better to say How the role of Apps DBAs managing Oracle E-Business Suite (R12) will change in Cloud.
If you are new to the cloud, then I would suggest you check my previous post on Cloud Service Model SaaS PaaS & IaaS
Does Cloud mean No Job for Apps DBAs?
Well, the answer to this question is partially correct but it depends on how you see it. If you are talking Cloud in the context of Software as a Service (SaaS) then the answer is correct.
A majority of tasks in SaaS will be performed by the Software/Cloud provider like Oracle, Microsoft (for Azure) or Amazon (for AWS).
However, there is still a big market for running Oracle E-Business Suite (R12) on IaaS or IaaS+PaaS. Similarly, there are (and more in future) custom Applications deployed on PaaS offering of Cloud that need a database on the Cloud.
There are a lot of PaaS applications like Java Cloud Service (JCS), SOA Cloud Service (SOA CS), Process Cloud Service (PCS) etc and those services will be going to run on PaaS or IaaS and that is where the Job of Cloud DBA/Apps DBA.
Role of Cloud Apps DBA
Now, We will see what are the roles of Cloud Apps DBA:
To understand the Architecture of EBS
As an Oracle Apps DBAs, you will be handling Oracle E-Business Suite (R12) which basically has 3 Tier Architecture (To know more about Architecture, click here).
To understand the Deployment Options on Oracle Cloud
Oracle E-Business Suite (R12) can be deployed in 2 Ways which are Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and Cloud at Customer (C@C). (To know more about Deployment Architecture, click here).
To learn Networking on OCI for EBS
Networking for EBS (R12) on Cloud, is one of the most difficult topics for Apps DBAs & Architects. It consists of Region, Availability Domain, VCN, Subnet, Security Lists & Load Balancer (To know more about Networking, click here).
To Managing EBS with Cloud
EBS Cloud Manager is a tool through which you can manage E-Business Suite on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). This tool can be used to Create, Manage, Configure Oracle application on Oracle Cloud (OCI) (To know more about EBS Cloud Manager, click here).
To learn Migration (Lift & Shift) to Cloud
Lift & Shift is a process of migrating your on-prem Application & Databases to the cloud and it is one of the most important aspects for Apps DBA to learn. (FREE Masterclass on Migrate EBS (R12) To Cloud With Almost Zero Downtime)
To learn Securing EBS on OCI
Security is one of the important aspects of any application and for Securing EBS on OCI, there are many options at each level. Few of them are SSL Certificate, IAM, IDCS & TDE.
To understand High Availability & Disaster Recovery
What will happen to the business if any unfortunate disaster happens or load increases? That is why you will need to learn about HA & DR (To know more about HA & DR, click here).
Now it’s your turn to post your answers in the comment section and let us know where you are facing challenges in EBS on Cloud
This post is from our Course “Build, Manage & Migrate (Lift & Shift) EBS (R12) on Cloud Expert” with 1 Year On-Job Support and 1 year Unlimited FREE Retakes (If you need to know more about this program then reach out to our team at contact@k21academy.com )

Hello Atul,
I am Oracle APPS DBA with 10years of experience, wanted to learn cloud now, which one can you suggest in cloud is that oracle cloud or AWS or anything else….please let me know your valuable suggestion.
Atul Kumar says
@Nash, AWS is good from pure IaaS point of view but if you are an Oracle DBA or Oracle Apps DBA or working on Oracle Weblogic, SOA etc then you are better learning Oracle Cloud (Oracle Cloud OCI/IaaS) or Oracle Database Cloud Service or Oracle EBS R12 on Cloud.
Reason: Oracle has now tools to run database (DBaaSCLI, build RAC) or EBS (EBS Cloud Admin Tool https://k21academy.com/ebscloud11 ) better and with new pricing model costing comes down cheaper on Oracle Cloud. Me being Oracle Apps DBA or DBA is learning Oracle Cloud and I highly recommend Oracle Cloud for Oracle professionals .

Hello Atul,
Thank you for the brief.
I have one query, the way oracle fusion applications is booming in the market. Do you think still companies will prefer EBS On-Prem or EBS on cloud ?
In the era of fusion, how will be the market of EBS from the earning point of view ?
Please share your thoughts.
Thank you
Rohit Pathak says
Hi BM,
Thanks for the feedback.
Yes I do understand the concern that oracle fusion applications is booming in the market, then why people will prefer EBS On-Premise or EBS On Cloud.
The reason is that company who all running EBS On-premise might have Terabytes of Data or custome code built on top of EBS, so migrationg to Fusion Appliocation is quite challenging as it totally SaaS Based model wherein when you run EBS On-premise or Cloud, you can built custome codes or migrating EBS to cloud quite simpler, its depend on customer requirement and the type of workload you are running.
Thanks & Regards,
Rohit

Dear Atul Kumar,
I have worked in an Automobile company as an Oracle Apps Dba, recently the company which i was working has migrated to Fusion Cloud. Due to that reason, i have lost my job and still searching for a job.
What can i do now, to proceed further with the same role or i need to get certified course, if certified course is needed then what and which i need to learn. Please help me.
Varsha Sharma Sharma says
Hi Sriram,
A lot of companies are nowadays working on the upgrade of their current EBS version to the higher one which is supported from Oracle or have extended support.
You can go with EBS Upgrade Course in that case.
Also, right now the appsdba certification 1Z0-238 has been depricated from Oracle, and a new version is expected anytime.
Regards
