What is AWS CloudHSM?
AWS CloudHSM is a cloud-hosted Hardware Security Module (HSM) service that allows you to perform cryptographic operations and host encryption keys. It gives customers an extra level of protection for data with contractual, strict corporate and regulatory compliance requirements. It let you generate and use your encryption keys on AWS Cloud.
Its primary goal is to ensure that cryptographic keys are always protected, both at rest and in transit. By providing a physically isolated environment, AWS CloudHSM ensures that sensitive operations are shielded from potential breaches that could occur in less secure, multi-tenant environments.
With CloudHSM, encryption keys are managed using FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validated HSMs. It is managed by Amazon, but the keys are controlled and managed by the customer only.
Working of AWS CloudHSM
You need to create a CloudHSM cluster for using the AWS CloudHSM service. These clusters contain multiple HSMs that are present across multiple Availability Zones over a region. The HSMs are automatically synchronised and load-balanced in a cluster. Each HSM behaves like a network resource in an Amazon VPC. And, you receive single-tenant access to each HSM within an Amazon VPC (Virtual Private Cloud). As AWS CloudHSM runs on Amazon VPC therefore you can use standard VPC security controls to manage HSMs access.
A user can add and remove HSMs from a cluster with a single call to AWS CloudHSM API or via AWS CLI. After the creation of a CloudHSM cluster, it can be configured on EC2 instances. Thus, it allows users to use HSM with applications running on Amazon EC2 instances. Using mutually authenticated SSL channels established by HSM client software, HSMs can connect to applications. Hence, network latency is also reduced in the connection as HSMs are located in Amazon Data Centres near EC2 instances.
AWS CloudHSM is fully secured and contains a tamper detection mechanism to protect encryption keys. Therefore, the appliance erases its partitions after three unsuccessful attempts to access an HSM partition with admin credentials.

- Open solution – It eliminates vendor lock-in and makes it easy for you to migrate keys on or off the AWS Cloud. You can transfer your keys to other commercial HSM solutions.
- Industry-standard APIs – It offers integration with custom applications using industry-standard APIs. Also, it supports multiple programming languages like PKCS#11, Java Cryptography Extensions (JCE), and Microsoft CryptoNG (CNG) libraries.
- AWS-managed infrastructure – It is a managed service that automates administrative tasks, such as hardware provisioning, high availability, software patching, and backups.
AWS CloudHSM Pricing
Coming to the pricing part, for the old or the classic customers, the classic AWS CloudHSM is still offered with $5000 USD upfront cost for each instance launched and then an hourly fee after that until it gets terminated.
But for the new customers, there is no upfront cost to use AWS CloudHSM. You only pay an hourly fee for each HSM you launch till the termination. This hourly fee is not fixed and ranges from $1 to $3 USD based on the selected AWS region.
