Oracle Directory Service (ODS) is suite of products from Oracle containing Directory Services like
- Oracle Internet Directory (OID)
- Oracle Unified Directory (OUD)
- Oracle Directory Services Enterprise Edition (ODSEE) and
- Oracle Virtual Directory (OVD)
and is used for storing users, groups, and enterprise assets into LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) Servers.
In this video, we are going to look at the difference between all these Directory Service Products and Question like why so many?
- Oracle Directory Services Enterprise Edition (ODSEE): It is rebranding and enhancement of LDAP Server from SUN (Company acquired by Oracle).
This product is no more in Oracle’s Vision, use OUD for any new implementation. - Oracle Internet Directory (OID): Oracle had their own directory server that is Oracle Internet Directory (OID) and data in OID is stored in an Oracle Database.
- Oracle Unified Directory (OUD): Oracle in recent years developed a brand new LDAP Server completely rewritten in JAVA for a very large & scalable deployment and a very performant directory server implementation to store billions of users.
This is Oracle’s recommended LDAP Server and can be used with products like Oracle Access Manager, Oracle E-Business Suite (R12), Oracle Identity Manager (OIM) or Oracle Fusion Middleware (FMW). - Oracle Virtual Directory (OVD): As the name suggests OVD is a Virtualization Layer that sits in front of multiple LDAP Servers or Users stored in Database or Other User Stores.So let’s assume, you have multiple data sources where users are stored and you have clients that need to see these users in different stores. In that scenario, Oracle virtual directory (OVD) acts as a Proxy Layer where there are different adapters one for each of these backend LDAP servers or User Stores and provides a single view for the clients.
From the client’s point of view, there is a Single LDAP server i.e. Oracle virtual Directory that acts as a proxy to the multiple LDAP servers.
As discussed in the video Oracle’s Recommendation for any implementation or any large or scalable implementation is Oracle Unified Directory (OUD). OUD also has Replication & Proxy Configuration. If you have to implement a new LDAP server or directory service or Identity and Access Management from Oracle, you should be deploying or implementing Oracle Unified Directory (OUD).

Thanks for providing this video, it’s really informative.
You also mentioned about Replication & Proxy configuration, so I did a research and found Oracle provide RGW (Replication Gateway Tool) to configure replication between ODSEE and OUD, but need to know, does it really require to have replication after migration from ODSEE or OUD can be independently used for Users and Groups.
