As all the trainees are very enthusiastic, eager to learn and asking lots of good questions through live interactive session, We at K21 took a conscious decision to extend the training by one more day, which means that the trainees will get one additional bonus session with Oracle ACE & Author Atul Kumar and Amit Sharma 🙂
The Day 3 of the R12.2 Upgrade training started with question from previous week’s session and then deep dived into the left out topics of previous weeks session before continuing with the Day 3 session.
Day 3 of the workshop started with discussions on Best Practices and hardware sizing requirements and then deep dived into the actual upgrade process especially on database upgrade steps, R12.2 upgrade preparation tasks and then the actual upgrade driver execution. Once we are done with the left over topics of Day, we immediately proceeded with the actual Day 3 topics of upgrade finishing tasks and with an understanding of the Online Patching enablement process
And here is one of the PPT from the session
Covering 4 topics on the R12.2 upgrade from Day 3 PPT
- Finishing the Upgrade
- Online Patching Enablement
- Post Upgrade Tasks
- Upgrade to 12.2.X
We covered the upgrade driver finishing tasks followed with a theoretical overview of the Online Patching enablement process with a promise to again explain the nuances involved with Online Patching enabled on the Day 4 session (which we can afford now as we got an additional day :-))
We are supposed to cover an in depth discussion on Online Patching Enablement process and also on post upgrade tasks and 12.2.5 upgrade on Day 3 but decided to push it to the fourth day session.
Here are just some of the questions that we discussed and worth sharing
Q1) When do we choose abandon vs restart for ADOP ?
A1) If we want to continue a failed patch session, we go with restart option but if that patch session cannot be continued or if we are sure that the leftover fnd_install_processes table are from some failed adadmin session, then we can use abandon option. However, we have to exercise caution with Abandon option
Q2) Which is the quicker way to start services, adstrtal.sh takes 20 minutes ?
A2) This is a known issue with 12.2, the best way is to start Admin Server / Node Manager / OPMN / Apache services through its individual scripts parallelly across all the application nodes and then starting all the managed services across all the nodes in one shot using weblogic admin console. Of course scripting is also an option but admin console also does the job
Q3) Do we need to recreate concurrent programs again and set related parameters in 12.2 after upgrade which exist in 12.1?
A3) No, all concurrent program definitions will exist in the database after upgrade
Q4) Does upgrade downtime depend on size of database?
A4) Absolutely, that is why we recommend to purge/archive as much as we can prior to upgrade.
Q5) Can upgrade downtime be reduced with RAC ?
A5) No, downtime goes up if you use RAC, it is recommended to go with a single high end server for upgrade window
Q6) Roadmap for 12c is to go for pdbs. is EBS compatible?
A6) No, PDB is not certified yet for E-business Suite
Q7) Adding additional OACORE will help upgrade any way..after we apply ADOP patch?
A7) No, additional managed servers will not help with ADOP, managed servers are more for front end user consumption, ADOP will not use them
Q8) Role of CONFIG_JVM_ARGS during adop cycle ?
A8) The default heap sizing of the admin server is never adequate for a large environment, we should increase Admin server heap size to 2 GB for optimal performance
Q9) Do we need to deregister the DMZ before upgrade ?
A9) Oracle R12.2 upgrade driver will not consider nodes in your environment currently, so we need not worry about deregistering the servers but the DMZ servers will need to be rebuilt after the upgrade completion
Q10) Is TTS supported as a means for database upgrade ?
A10) Yes, for 11gR2 but no for 12c, it is not yet certified for 12c.
Q11) Is Gather Schema Statistics required prior to upgrade, if yes what percentage ?
A11) It is definitely required before upgrade and we would recommend that is run as close to the upgrade as possible, we would recommend minimum percentage of 30-40%
Q12) Will length of hostname affect the upgrade process ?
A12) No, R12.1 got a limitation of 30 characters for Concurrent Manager nodes but that bug is fixed with R12.2
Q13) Do we need to add EBS_PATCH manually to SERVICE_NAMES parameter ?
A13) Yes, we should add and ensure that it is register with listener before the R12.2 file system layout process.
Q14) Hypothetical setup : 2 node HR with non shared appl_top ; laying down a new 2 node shared appl_top ; how to proceed ?
A14) Doesn’t matter, as we are going to lay down the R12.2 file system fresh, it doesn’t look for how the R12.1 setup is done, it will ignore that part.
Q15) Where should we run adsplice ?
A15) After AD-TXK patch application and before/after R12.2.5 upgrade
Q16) My adzdpsum report at client site didnt mention to run ADZDREG.sql for the tightly integrated Custom schema?
A16) It is not required if the custom schema is already registered in 12.1 or earlier versions, if it is a newly created schema then we need to run ADZDREG.sql for that schema
Q17) Should MVs that will be dropped will be custom MVs or standard as well ?
A17) Only custom materialized views for standard materialized views Oracle will take care of dropping and recreating it.
