In this blog, we will cover the Q&As from Day 3 of Migrate Apps & Database to Cloud (AWS Workshop) covering Application Migration to AWS FAQs. This blog will help you to get started with Application Migration to AWS.
In this session, We covered Module 3: Application Migration to AWS which covers the following objectives.
The course which is available on our Portal looks like below. We encourage trainees to go through the well-done recorded videos before coming to the Live session so that they can come prepared with their doubts & can clear the doubts during the session to make it more Interactive.
[Q/A] Related to Application Migration to AWS
Q1: What is application modernization in migration?
Ans: Application modernization is the practice of updating older software for newer computing approaches, including newer languages, frameworks, and infrastructure platforms. This method is sometimes referred to as legacy modernization or modernizing legacy applications.
Q2: Is the cloud formation template similar to terraform?
Ans: They are both infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools: Terraform and CloudFormation. AWS created CloudFormation, which solely manages AWS resources. HashiCorp created Terraform, which can manage resources across a variety of cloud suppliers.
Q3: What is Application Migration to AWS?
Ans: The recommended service for migrations to AWS is AWS Application Migration Service (AWS MGN). AWS Application Migration Service simplifies and expedites your migration to AWS by automatically converting your source servers from physical, virtual, or cloud infrastructure to run natively on AWS.
Q4: What is the Application Discovery Process?
Ans: AWS Application Discovery Service collects and presents data to enable enterprise customers to understand the configuration, usage, and behavior of servers in their IT environments. In order to coordinate AWS migration planning, server data is kept in the Application Discovery Service where it may be tagged and categorized into apps. Data can be exported and then analyzed in Excel or with other cloud migration tools.
Q5:What kind of servers are compatible with the AWS Server Migration Service?
Ans: AWS Server Migration Service currently allows you to move virtual machines from Microsoft Azure, VMware vSphere, and Windows Hyper-V to AWS.
Q6: What are the main advantages of transferring on-premise Hyper-V VMs using AWS Server Migration Service?
Ans: Customers can drastically decrease human work and speed up migration by using SMS to automate an incremental replication of live server volumes to the AWS cloud as AMIs. By letting users schedule replications and monitor the progress of a group of servers, SMS manages server migrations, easing the logistical strain of organizing massive server migrations. Customers may test server migrations with ease thanks to incremental replication capability.
Q7: What is Database Migration Service (DMS)?
Ans: AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS) is a managed migration and replication service that helps move your database and analytics workloads to AWS quickly, securely, and with minimal downtime and zero data loss. The 20+ database and analytics engines that AWS DMS supports for migration include Oracle to Amazon Redshift, MySQL to Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), Microsoft SQL Server to Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, MongoDB to Amazon DocumentDB, and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).
Q8: How do I get started with AWS Database Migration Service?
Ans: With AWS Database Migration Service, getting started is quick and easy. Most data replication activities may be set up in less than 10 minutes.
Enter the Start Migration wizard by going to the AWS Database Migration Service section of the AWS Management Console. Choose an existing replication instance or start a new one, choose your source and target endpoints, accept the built-in schema mapping rules, or define your own modifications. As soon as you finish the wizard, data replication will begin.
Q9: What are the features of AWS Database Migration?
Ans:
- It’s easy to use the AWS Database Migration Service. In most instances, there is no need to modify the source database and no drivers or software need to be installed.
- Minimal downtime: You can transfer your databases to AWS with the help of the AWS Database Migration Service.
- AWS Database Migration Service is an inexpensive service. Your payment only covers the computing resources used during the migration procedure and any extra log storage.
- Reliable: The self-healing and incredibly resilient AWS Database Migration Service. It continuously keeps an eye on the replication instance, the network, and the source and target databases.
- Productivity for developers: Data can be moved into and out of the cloud using the AWS Database Migration Service.
- Database Consolidation: You can combine various source databases into a single target database using the AWS Database Migration Service.
Q10: What are the types of workload in AWS migration?
Ans: Virtual machine: VM Export – Import, AWS Server Migration Service (SMS), AWS Management Portal for vCenter
Microsoft working directory: AD connector, Simple AD, Enterprise edition
Q11: How to identify the Application Migration process?
Ans: In Application Migration, we need to identify the:
- The complexity of the application based on the 6Rs of migration
- Dependencies of the application based on its connections
- Suitability of the application based on performance pattern and usage
Q12: What is the Migration Hub home region?
Ans: Before using the Migration Hub and Application Discovery Service, you need to select a Migration Hub home region from the Migration Hub Settings page or use the Migration Hub Config API. The sole AWS region used by Application Discovery Service to store your discovery and planning data is the Migration Hub home region. For your entire portfolio, the data kept in the Migration Hub home region offers a single repository for discovery and migration planning data as well as a single view of migrations into other AWS regions.
The Migration Hub home region cannot be altered after it has been selected.
Q13: Why should I use AWS Migration Hub?
Ans: The one-stop shop for cloud migration and modernization, AWS Migration Hub provides you with all the resources you need to hasten and streamline your AWS experience. Making the case for the cloud within your company, planning, carrying out, and monitoring a portfolio of application migrations to AWS, or modernizing apps already operating on AWS are all things that Migration Hub can assist with.
Q14: Am I able to view applications made by other users under the same account?
Ans: Yes. Any other IAM users within the same account who are given access to the AWS Migration Hub will be able to see any applications established by any IAM user within the account. All users with permission will be able to see any modifications that are made.
Q15: What is the EC2 instance recommendations feature?
Ans: The EC2 instance recommendations tool in AWS Migration Hub analyses the information received from each premises server, which includes server specifications, CPU, and memory consumption, to recommend the lowest-priced EC2 instance required to fulfill the on-premises workload. You can fine-tune suggestions (average, peak, or percentile) by specifying preferences for an AWS purchase option, an AWS region, EC2 instance type exclusions, and a CPU/RAM utilization metric.
Q16: Does AWS Migration Hub move my applications for me automatically?
Ans: No. The migration steps are not automated by AWS Migration Hub. It gives you a central location to monitor the development of the applications you are transferring.
Q17. What is AWS DMS Fleet Advisor?
Ans: AWS Database Migration Service’s AWS DMS Fleet Advisor is a completely free feature (AWS DMS). It streamlines migration planning and makes it easy to scale up database and analytics fleet migrations to the cloud.
