This post covers the overview of Oracle Database on Cloud including various Database Offerings & Database Edition available in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
Database Offerings
1. In Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Database is divided into two types:
a) User-Managed Database
b) Autonomous Database
1. User-Managed Database: In User-Managed database, DBA task such as patching, cloning, backup & restore is managed by customers. It is further divided into three types.
- Virtual Machine DB Systems: Database is running on Virtual Machine & It supports both 1 -node, and 2-node RAC DB systems on Virtual Machine.
- Bare Metal DB System: Database is running on Bare Metal & It only supports only 1-node DB systems (RAC is not supported)
- Note: Where A bare metal server is a “single tenant” physical server. This means that the server is dedicated to one customer and not shared between multiple customers & A virtual server is hosted in a “multi-tenant” environment. This is where multiple virtual servers share the same physical hardware.
- Exadata DB System: Exadata DB systems runs on Exadata on Cloud and consist of a quarter rack, half rack, or full rack of compute nodes and storage servers, tied together by a high-speed, low-latency InfiniBand network and intelligent Exadata software and it is always a 2-node RAC only.
2. Autonomous Database: Oracle Cloud Infrastructure‘s Autonomous Database is fully managed by Oracle such as patching and another administrating task. Autonomous Database is further divided into types:
- ADW: ADW stands for Autonomous Data Warehouse and used for decision support or data warehouse workload.
- ATP: ATP stands for Autonomous Transaction Processing and used for a transactional workload.

Database Editions
All 1- node RAC DB systems support the following Oracle Database editions:
- Standard Edition
- Enterprise Edition
- Enterprise Edition – High Performance
- Enterprise Edition – Extreme Performance (required for 2-node RAC DB systems)

Oracle Cloud Certifications available for DBAs:
There are mainly two types of certifications available for DBAs on Oracle Cloud.
- Oracle Cloud Database Certification Exam [1Z0-160]
- Oracle Autonomous Database Cloud Certification Exam [1Z0-931]
1. Oracle Cloud Database Certification Exam [1Z0-160]: To become Oracle Database Cloud certified, you would need to pass the Oracle Database Cloud Service 1Z0-160. This tests your Oracle Database Cloud Service skills, demonstrating your ability to administer your database in the Cloud. For More details please check our blog Cloud Database Certification Exam [1Z0-160]
2. Oracle Autonomous Database Cloud Certification Exam [1Z0-931]: An Oracle Autonomous Database Specialist is an individual who has the skills to Manage complete Lifecycle Management of Autonomous Database (ATP & ADW) which includes a provision, manage & migrate to Autonomous Transaction Database (ATP) and Autonomous Data Warehouse (ADW).

Supported Database Editions & Versions On OCI
Editions
All 1- and 2-node RAC DB systems support the following Oracle Database editions:
Standard Edition
Enterprise Edition
Enterprise Edition – High Performance
Enterprise Edition – Extreme Performance (required for 2-node RAC DB systems)
How 2-node RAC supports above editions other than extreme performance? Pls clarify.
Rohit Pathak says
Hi Shyam,
Thanks for highlighting this, it was a typo yes two RAC node is only supported in Enterprise Edition – Extreme Performance (required for 2-node RAC DB systems) also RAC is only available in Virtual Machine & Exadata, it is for Bare Metal.
Thanks & Regards,
Rohit(TeamK21)

Q). For what business need should you use Database Cloud Service (DBCS) instead of an Oracle database on a compute instance?
Answer: 2. To lower license and Infrastructure cost
Rohit Pathak says
Hi Karen,
Thanks for the update!
yes, you are correct, we can use DBCS instead of Compute to lower the license & infrastructure cost because when you deploy on compute instance you have to pay for Compute as well as for Database licenses
Thanks & Regards,
Rohit (Teamk21)

Q). For what business need should you use Database Cloud Service (DBCS) instead of an Oracle database on a compute instance?
A :to implement Oracle RAC for high availability
“Oracle database on a compute instance” option is difficult to setup with shared storage needed for RAC . DBCS has RAC inbuilt option
Rohit Pathak says
Hi Vinay,
The correct answer will be 2. To lower license and Infrastructure cost because on compute we need to manually setup everything which includes creating and installing database on top of it, wherein DBCS its build system separetly for database
