Day 4 of the workshop deep dived into the Online Patching (ADOP) Enablement process (Online Patching is introduced in R12.2 and repalces ADPATCH used in 11i/r12.0/r12.1) with explanation of various scripts and tools which helps the DBAs and Developers to enable online patching with ease.
Emphasize was given to the DBA side of the online patching enablement process and what a DBA must do to fix issues with Online Patching Enablement with examples of typical issues we faced at our client end. We also spent a sizeable chunk of time on automation of scalability jobs like adding/deleting managed servers and changing its properties as per customer requirement (WebLogic Domain, Admin & Managed Server is another new feature introduced in R12.2).
And here is one of the PPT from the session :
Covering 4 topics on the R12.2 upgrade from Day 4 PPT which now also includes scalability automation
- Online Patching Enablement
- post Upgrade Tasks
- Upgrade to 12.2.X
It has been a very fruitful session with several interactive questions around the way the core applications upgrade is done. Here are just some of the questions that we discussed and worth sharing :
Q.1) Which version of E-Business is stablized R12.2.5/R12.2.6 ?
A.1) We strongly recommend to stay with R12.2.5 for the time being (as of early Jan 2017), as R12.2.6 just got released. It would be worth moving to R12.2.6 after a few months once most of the bugs are identified and documented.
Q.2) How do you speed up recompile of invalids during upgrade ?
A.2) We have to go with the maximum number of workers possible during the upgrade for speeding up the invalids recompilation but it should be noted that allocating more workers than what the server can handle will actually slow down the upgrade not withstanding the invalids compilation itself
Q.3) I was laying down R12.2 filesystem and it says port in use, do I need a downtime ?
A.3)If you are doing an in-place upgrade on the same server where you have your existing environment then yes, you will need a short downtime until rapidwiz completes that step, if it is an out of place upgrade, then no downtime is necessary.
Q.4) checkMTpatch.sh fails on R12.1.3, why ??
A.4)This script is designed specifically for R12.2, it cannot be used for later versions.
Q.5) Any issues if we have inst_group is different for oracle user and applmgr user ?
A.5)It would cause issues with utl_file if your developers are creating file as Oracle user (through utl_file) and move the file via application user. It is best if it matches, we recommend changing the application uid/gid to match that of Oracle user as it simple and straight forward.
Q.6) Online patching enablement issues on custom objects, will Oracle Support ?
A.6)Yes, they will support as long as the object in question is as per Oracle R12.2 development standards.
Q.7) We can use this script ADZDSHOWDDLS.sql only for the online enablement patch or other patches also we can use ?
A.7) We can also use it to monitor database during patch edition creation.
Q.8) Can we run utlrp.sql when services are up and running same as in 12.1 ?
A.8) We recommend not to run utlrp when the system is very busy, even in a 12.1 environment, suggest to run in off business hours and yes, we can run for R12.2 as well
Q.9) Difference between dba_objects and ad_objects ?
A.9) In case of R12.2, invalids have to be checked on AD_OBJECTS rather than the traditional method of DBA_OBJECTS, this is due to an open bug with the inability of DBA_OBJECTS view to look for invalids recursively on the editions.
Q.10) What is the difference between ADZDPCUST.sql & ADZDREG.sql ?
A.10) ADZDPCUST.sql is a template which will help you with Registering/Removing/Deleting a schema whereas ADZDREG.sql is solely used for registering a schema, in fact ADZDPCUST.sql register schema template actually shows calling the ADZDREG.sql

Q.11) How do u troubleshoot a ebiz url which is offloaded to loadbalanced URL ?
A.11)The best approach would be to make the application single node and test the functionality which is not working via Load Balancer. Another thing that can be checked is whether the load balancer is configured as per Oracle standard. Refer to Oracle article id “Implementing Load Balancing On Oracle E-Business Suite – Documentation For Specific Load Balancer Hardware (Doc ID 727171.1)” for documentation specific to a Load Balancer
Q.12) adopmon from where does it take the log messages ?
A.12) It takes from ad_zd_logs tables.
Q.13) We should user same name of custom schema as 12.1.3 in adsplice ?
A.13) Yes for sure, we need to use the same custom schema name
Q.14) For every schema we do ADZDREG.sql we need to run adsplice for them ?
A.14) If it is a tightly integrated schema already in your existing version then you need not register it here, it would be already registered but if it is a new schema implementation, then yes ADZDREG.sql should be run for that schema prior to online patching enablement and then adsplice should be after TXK-AD patching.
Q.15) bsu.sh how to learn more about it ?
A.15) Refer to Atul’s blog “https://onlineappsdba.com/index.php/2010/02/23/opatch-adpatch-and-now-smart-update-bsu-to-apply-weblogic-patches/”
Q.16) If i apply hot patch on Run FS thwn can i run fs_clone directly to sync the Patch FS ?
A.16) Yes , you can run fs_clone directly to sync the Patch FS.
Q.17) Is larger Managed Server heap size not recommended ?
A.17) No, recommendation from Oracle is to create multiple managed servers of 2 GB heap size each
Q.18) How many managed servers of the same type can you use on the same physical server ?
A.18) It boils down to the servers capacity, general thumb rule is 100 to 150 users per managed server.
Q.19) Dont we need to specify t3 URL for starting managed servers ?
A.19) No the adadminsrvctl.sh will internally take care of that.
Q.20) If someone used alter command to change apps password? how to approach?
A.20) We need to reset the password back to old password (using alter user) and then use FNDCPASS to reset it properly.
