We recently had our EBS upgrade to R12.2 Batch finished and we have got a lot of questions from the trainees, some of them were doing the upgrade for the first time, and it’s not an easy task.
So, In this post, we have given an overview of the questions that were asked during the sessions and were faced by trainees while doing the upgrade.
Firstly, for those who are new this upgrade term, please do check my previous blog post on, EBS R12.2 Upgrade High-Level Overview.
So, Before getting into FAQs, let’s take a look at the new features and terms on which we received maximum FAQs.
P.S: This is only the part – I of the FAQs, will cover the part – II in the next blog.
Why Upgrade To EBS R12.2?
- Oracle Apps DBA is in great demand and with 12.2 experience
- Good Salary if you know 12.2 as 11i & 12.0 out of support
- Customers on R12.1 are also looking to upgrade to R12.2 to take advantage of Online Patching feature
What’s New For EBS With Oracle Database 19c
There are several mandatory architecture updates when you upgrade your Oracle E-Business Suite database to Oracle Database 19c. The following is a summary of the key required architectural changes:
- Container Database (CDB) Architecture: With the Database 19c certification, EBS 12.2 on-premises databases are now certified with the CDB architecture (multitenant architecture). As part of the upgrade to Database 19c, you will convert your EBS database to the CDB architecture with a single pluggable database (PDB).
- PL/SQL File Input/Output Directories: With Database 19c, the UTL_FILE_DIR database initialization parameter has been de-supported. As part of the upgrade to Database 19c, you must migrate all UTL_FILE_DIR database initialization parameters to database directory objects. EBS development has created a utility to migrate and manage your defined PL/SQL file input/output directories.
- ADG DML Redirection: Previously, you could only update the Global Temp Tables on Active Data Guard standby database. From Oracle 19c, you can also update regular tables.
ADG_REDIRECT_DML enables DML redirection from Oracle Active Data Guard.

Q.4 Weblogic upgrade is mandatory in 19c database?
Ans. It’s not mandatory as of now, there is no such flow or requirement to upgrade the Weblogic from Oracle.
Q.5 Is scan listener-supported in 19c?
Ans. Yes, it is supported.
Note: Single client access name (SCAN), a set of three IPs that will be listening to all the hosts (not bound to any one host), advance feature for seamless addition, and deletion of RAC nodes.
Q.6 Is flashback logs at pdb level?
Ans. Yes, 19c has that option.
Q.7 How to check if cdb-pdb is already available?
Ans. Run the command ‘Show pdbs’
Clone In EBS R12.2
- Its a method of creating an identical copy of an existing Applications system
- To create a test system from a Production System
- To create a training system
- Move an existing system to another machine * binary compatible
- We can clone to a binary compatible platform
- E.g.: AIX 4.3.3 to AIX 5.1
or
HP-UX 11.0 to HP-UX 11i
- E.g.: AIX 4.3.3 to AIX 5.1
- We cannot clone to a different Platform:-
- E.g.: AIX to SOLARIS
Related FAQs:
Q.1 For cloning, does storage based cloning work for EBS? Can I take a clone of my disk and attach it to another server and make it work – to shorten cloning times?
Ans: You need to tar the file and you can copy to the target location.
To know more about the cloning in EBS R12.2, check our blog post at Oracle Apps DBA (R12.2) Cloning: Basic Steps
Q.2 So for post cloning – the process creates the FMW home fresh – would there be any need for developers to add custom items to WLS, and if so, is there any way this can be automated? eg, any similar to CUSTOM_TOP or templates?
Ans. It restores FMW Home from backup, pre-clone will take the backup. So, customization is preserved.
Q.3 So if I copied the ORACLE_HOME/DB files etc to the new server – then is a simple adcgflone (do not support hot backup) DB tier good enough to clone the DB tier?
Ans. Yes, you can use adcfgclone if have taken a cold backup.
Concurrent Managers In EBS R12.2
The Concurrent Manager service is a batch processing tool that provides scheduling and queuing functionality for background jobs and is used by most of the Oracle Applications modules. It is a key service within Ebusiness Suite which runs the user requests in the background thus ensuring that the user can continue with other days to day tasks while the requested change/activity is carried out by the Concurrent Manager.
To know more about the concurrent managers in EBS R12.2, check our post Concurrent Managers: Overview & Concepts Oracle EBS R12
Below are the FAQs on the Concurrent Managers
Q.1 Where are the concurrent manager binaries stored?
Ans. /INST/$CONTEXT_NAME/logs/appl/conc
Patching In EBS R12.2
Patching in EBS R12.2 is done by ADOP, which has the following phases:
- Prepare Phase
- Apply Phase
- Finalize Phase
- Cutover Phase
- Cleanup Phase
To know more about the patching, check our previous post at Oracle Apps DBA (R12.2) Patching (ADOP)
Related FAQs:
Q.1 Completing cut over is it required to run fs_clone.
Ans. Not mandatory, but recommended, fs_clone deletes the patch file system and recreates it from the run file system. It syncs your patch file system with run file system.
Q.2 Unable to find appltop_id for host xxxx in the database, and the cutover phase has failed. How to resolve this patching issue.
Ans. Try to run the autoconfig and retrigger the cutover.
Q.3 Can you explain about downtime mode.
Ans. You stop all the apps tier services, then you call ADOP in downtime mode, it will apply the patch in full downtime mode.
Q.4 I’ve installed R12.2.0 with startCD51 on OEL6.8 with default DB R12c and applied all ETCC patches successfully on both DB and Apps Node and upgraded to 12.2.9; one DB patch 25305405 has also applied but when I run adop its showing as not applied.
Ans. Adop doesn’t know itself if the patch is applied or not, so it’s not synchronized.
Run ./checkDBpatch.sh (etcc tool) on the DB node after all the patches are applied so that it gets synchronized.
There are a backend table Txk_tcc_results, so in that table the record has to be updated that the patch is applied, ADOP query that table to check for the patch

Upgrade High-level Steps
Q.1 For In-place upgrade, Which Application server node, i need to select CM NODE or WebNode. Do We select one node and need to remove the other node before the application upgrade?
Ans. Oracle will take the server you provide, and you must use the primary server and all the services will be configured on that server.
Q.2 Before the upgrade is it better to taken care of custom unused/unwanted schemas?
Ans. After upgrading to R12.2.0, you can run the adsplice, for an individual custom schema.
Q.3 if we want to do upgrade in our own system, what is the requirement? sys configuration?
Ans. 2 mount points, u01 and root, 16gb RAM, I5 processor.
Mountpoint size
Ans. 500G
OS version
Ans. Linux 7 or above
How many VMs
Ans. Only 1 VM
Q.4 Can we add an increase OPP for the specific concurrent programs only.
Ans. No, the concurrent program uses OPP, and OPP is heap size global for all the databases, not for any concurrent programs.
Q.5 Managed server changes for external DMZ nodes steps varies from internal nodes? We have irecruitment and Isupplier as external nodes. Any tip or challenges for external nodes.
Ans. When it comes to external nodes, there are no forms and managed server to be added, the steps remain the same:
- Use the same steps to provision
- Add the managed servers
- Bounce the Apache server
It is similar to the internal node, only you don’t need to do anything for Forms, as forms are a component that doesn’t start in the DMZ layer.
Q.6 What is the best way to migrate db from hp-ux to Linux? considering downtime.
Ans. export/import or XTSS migration
Q.7 During our upgrade to 12.2 how to deal with custom codes that running in 12.1.3 and does it need to modify respective to EBR?
Ans. You need to modify your custom codes as per EBR standards, and it is mandatory.
Q.8 if you drop the custom schema’s during upgrade won’t the data be lost?
Ans. The custom schema will be coming as part of the upgrade, as it in the database. The custom application top files should be copied manually.
Q.9 how do you confirm if your tablespaces are in OATM mode?
Ans. Check the number of tablespaces in dba_tablespaces.. if it shows only tablespaces like APPS_TS_% then it is the OATM model. If it is having multiple <schema>D and <schema>X tablespaces like POD and POX.. then it is a non-OATM model.
Q.10 The Server is not able to service this request: [Socket:000445]Connection rejected, filter blocked Socket, weblogic.security.net.FilterException: [Security:090220]rule 2
Ans: You need to update config.xml connection filter to allow from denying make sure to take the backup of config.xml before updating.
For permanent fix for your issue, Please update s_wls_admin_console_access_nodes
to include all ebs nodes in XML context file and run auto-config.
