Azure offers 4 role-based certifications for Machine learning/Data Science, Data Engineering, Database Administering, and Data Analysis which are DP-100 for ML/data science, DP-203 for Data Engineering, DP-300 for Database Administering, and PL-300 for Data Analysts.
We get many questions in our Free Live Classes of Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals [DP-900] like:
- What is the difference between DP-100, DP-203, DP-300, and PL-300?
- Is DP-900 a pre-requisite for all?
- Which certification should I go for?
So in this blog, we are going to answer these questions and give a detailed overview of each of these certifications.
Overview
Before we get started with the certifications, let us look at some terms which are related to these certifications.
1.) Machine Learning- As the name itself signifies ‘Machine Learn’, that is the system has the ability to self-learn and improve without being explicitly programmed. It is a subset of Artificial Intelligence. Machine learning algorithms directly learn from data without relying on a predetermined equation.
2.) Data- It refers to information in such a form that can be processed efficiently. Data can either be structured or unstructured. To learn more about it you can read our blog Structured Data Vs Unstructured Data Vs Semi-Structured Data.
3.) Data Science- It refers to using Scientific methods to turn data into some value that can be used in predictive modeling. It combines different fields of work in statistics and computation to interpret data for decision-making.
4.) Data Engineering- It is a form of data science that targets practical applications of data collection and analysis which includes storing data, receiving data, transforming data, and making it available for the end-users.
5.) Data Analytics- It is the study of datasets to figure out conclusions from the information using particular systems software. it concentrates on specific areas with specific goals. Data Analysts enable businesses to maximize the worth of their data assets by using tools like Microsoft Power BI.
Now let’s look at the three Azure data science and data engineering certifications.
Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals DP-900
DP-900 is targeted at those candidates who want to start working with data on the cloud and get basic skills in cloud data services along with building their foundational knowledge of cloud data services in Microsoft Azure.
Azure Data Fundamentals can be used to prepare for other Azure certifications like Azure Data Engineer Associate [DP-203], Azure Data Scientist Associate [DP-100], and Azure Database Administrator Associate [DP-300], however, it’s not a prerequisite for any of these exams.
The job roles for DP-900 include DBA, Data Engineers, and Data Analyst.
The candidates are tested on these 4 skills:
- Understand core data concepts
- Understand how to work with relational data on Azure
- Understand how to work with non-relational data on Azure
- Describe an analytics workload on Azure
There are some Step-by-Step Hands-On Guides recommended by us that will give a clear idea of how these concepts can be applied practically and are also important from an exam point of view.

Microsoft Azure Data Scientist Associate DP-100
DP 100 Designing and Implementing a Data Science Solution on Azure is aimed at those who apply their knowledge of data science and machine learning to implement and run machine learning workloads on Azure, using Azure Machine Learning Service which implies planning and creating a suitable working environment for data science workloads on Azure, to run data experiments, and train predictive ML models.
The job roles for DP-100 include Data Scientist, Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence Engineer, and more.
The candidates are examined on these 4 skills:
- Setting up an Azure Machine Learning workspace.
- Run Experiments and Train Models
- Optimizing and Managing Models
- Deploying and Consuming Models
We have a list of Step-by-Step Hands-On Guides recommended by us which will help you understand the practical concepts and also help you get clear insights into the topics.

Microsoft Azure Data Engineer Associate DP-203
DP-203 is for candidates who are interested in implementing and designing the management, monitoring, security, and privacy of data to satisfy business needs using the Azure data services.
Candidates need to design data solutions using Azure services like Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure Data Factory, Azure Cosmos DB, etc, and collaborate with stakeholders of various businesses to identify and meet data requirements to implement data solutions.
The job roles for DP-203 include Data Engineers, Data Architects, Database Administrators, and more.
The candidates are examined on these 4 skills:
- Designing and Implementing Data Storage
- Design & Develop Data Processing Solutions
- Design & Implement Data Security
- Monitoring & Optimizing Data Storage and Data Processing
We have a complete set of Step-by-Step Hands-On Guides recommended by us for this course which will help you in getting your concepts both theoretically and practically clear and also important from the exam point of view.

Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst PL-300
Note: Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate was renamed Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate on February 28, 2022.
PL-300 certification enables Data Analysts to attain a good quality in their data assets with the assistance of Microsoft Power BI. The Power BI data analyst collaborates with key stakeholders across verticals to identify business requirements, clean and transform the data, and then design and build data models by using Power BI.
The job roles for PL-300 include Power BI Developer, Power BI Engineer, Power BI Consultants, Data Analysts, and more.
The candidates are examined on these 4 skills:
- Data Preparation
- Model the Data
- Visualize & Analyze Data
- Deploy and Maintain Deliverables
We have Step-by-Step Hands-On Guides recommended by us for this course which will help you in getting your concepts both theoretically and practically clear and also important from the exam point of view.
