In this post, I will be sharing all the useful information & learning material for Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer (ExaCC) and Oracle Exadata Cloud Service (ExaCS).
So, let’s start with a basic understanding of what is ExaCC & ExaCS?
Oracle Database Cloud Service
Oracle offers autonomous and User-managed Oracle Database cloud solutions as a Database Service.
- Autonomous databases are preconfigured, fully-managed environments that are suitable for either transaction processing or for data warehouse workloads.
- User-managed solutions are bare metal, virtual machine, and Exadata DB systems that you can customize with the resources and settings that meet your needs.
You can easily provision the required database on Oracle Cloud (OCI) Console. You have full access to the features and operations available with the database, but Oracle owns and manages the infrastructure.
Here in this blog, we will mainly focus on Exadata Cloud (ExaCS & ExaCC) so let’s begin…
About Exadata
Exadata is a database appliance designed by Oracle that has the competency to provide support to a combination of database systems such as OLTP (On-line Transaction Processing) and OLAP (Online Analytical Processing), the transactional and analytical database systems respectively.
Why Exadata?
The Oracle Exadata Database Machine is the World’s most secure database machine. It is engineered to be the top-performing and best available platform for running the Oracle Database. This simple and fast to implement machine protects and powers your most important database and is the perfect foundation for a consolidated database cloud.
Exadata Deployment Model
Oracle Exadata Database has three deployment options available:
- Exadata Cloud Service (ExaCS)
- Exadata Cloud at Customer (ExaCC)
- Exadata Machine
What is Exadata Cloud@Customer (ExaCC)?
Oracle Exadata Database Service on Exadata Cloud@Customer delivers the world’s most advanced database cloud to customers who require their databases to be located on-premises.

What is Exadata Cloud Service (ExaCS)?
Oracle Exadata Cloud Service is the best place for customers to run Oracle Database workloads in the cloud. Dedicated X8M infrastructure is isolated from other users, allowing database teams to improve security, performance, and uptime for customer databases.

ExaCC vs ExaCS vs On-prem Exadata
In the traditional On-Premise Exadata, Exadata Database Machine is in the client’s data center and is the client’s responsibility to manage the Exadata hardware with Oracle. In ExaCS and ExaCC, Oracle manages the Exadata hardware and firmware and the client manages the Exadata operating system and the database.

Exadata Cloud Service (ExaCS) Offerings
ExaCS has many Offerings which are Quarter Rack, Half Rack, and Full Rack shapes of Exadata and X6, X7 models of Exadata.

Oracle Exadata Cloud Service(ExaCS) Architecture
Each instance of Oracle Exadata Cloud Service contains multiple database servers and Exadata storage servers connected by high-speed, low-latency network fabric. The Exadata database and storage server racks reside in an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) region.

Roles and Responsibilities for Exadata Cloud Service Software Maintenance
Oracle is responsible for the base OS and hardware. The customer is responsible for the Guest VM OS, Grid Infrastructure, and database software maintenance.

Oracle Exadata Cloud Service(ExaCS) Storage Options
Depending on the configuration, there are 3, 6, and 12 Storage Servers in Exadata Cloud Service. In each Storage Server, there are four types of storage:
- Flash Storage
- 3 ASM Disk Groups: Data, Reco, and Sparse

Oracle Exadata Cloud Service (ExaCS) Networking
In order to provision an instance of Exadata On-Cloud, one needs to create a Virtual Cloud Network (VCN), Subnets & other networking components.
–> While creating a VCN there are two options available:
- Create VCN only
- Create VCN with related resources i.e. VCN with Subnets, Route Table, Subnets, Security Lists, etc.
–> A VCN can further be divided into smaller parts called Subnets. For an Exadata on-Cloud, there are two subnets that are required:
- Client Subnet
- Backup Subnet

High-level Overview of Exadata Cloud Service (ExaCS)
- Exadata Cloud Service instances require Enterprise Edition – Extreme Performance
- To enable customers to easily manage the lifecycle of their applications, ExaCS include All Advanced Oracle Database options, and All Advanced Oracle Exadata Hardware Innovations.
- Exadata provides a highly available data center, each data center has three Availablity domains for local failover as well as the ability to peer across regions.

Exadata (ExaCs) DB System: Shared Database Homes
You can add Oracle Database Homes to an existing Exadata DB system by using the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)Console, the API (Rest API), or the CLI (dbaascli). It also allows the user to create Multiple Database Homes in a Single Database.
Before, If you want to create 3 databases, you have to create 3 DB Oracle Home for each DB, but now you can put all those Databases into a single Oracle Home, which means you can now create, manage & delete these Oracle Home.
What Is Oracle Database Home?
A Database Home is a directory location on the Exadata database compute nodes that contain Oracle Database software binary files.
When you do Patching in Oracle Cloud, you first patch the DB System then you patch the Database home, DB System is nothing but the host machine where your database is installed.
