One blueprint, seven layers

Every AI system you will be asked to design fits this shape. What changes is which layers you build, which you buy, and what control you put at each one - so each layer here is given with its AWS and Azure services side by side.

Layer 1Experience

Chat, search, an embedded copilot or a batch job. Where the user meets the system.

Production controlStreaming, citations, graceful degradation and a visible path to a human.

CloudFront · S3 · AmplifyFront Door · Static Web Apps · App Service
Layer 2Gateway

Authentication, rate limits, quotas, guardrails, caching and routing. Your policy enforcement point.

Production controlInput and output guardrails, per-tenant quotas, semantic cache, cost attribution by request tag.

API Gateway · WAF · Bedrock GuardrailsAPI Management · WAF · AI Content Safety
Layer 3Orchestration

Workflows, agents, tool calls and the control flow between them.

The system design method

Nine steps that turn a blank brief into a defended design. You practise them against timed briefs until the answer comes out structured under pressure - which is exactly what a design interview is testing.

  1. 01Read the briefUsers, volume, latency, budget, data - and what nobody said out loud.
  2. 02Name the NFRsTurn vague requirements into non-functional requirements, then into SLOs with numbers.
  3. 03Pick the simplest approachRules, predictive ML, one LLM call, RAG, a workflow or an agent. In that order.
  4. 04Draw the seven layersLay the blueprint over the brief and mark what you build and what you buy.
  5. 05Choose the modelModel, routing strategy, fallback - and the reason you will be asked for.
  6. 06Design the data pathChunking, index, freshness, tenancy, and how a citation gets back to a source.
  7. 07Place the controlsGuardrails, cache, fallback, step and cost limits, one trace per request.
  8. 08Cost it out loudPer request and per month, including the hidden calls: guardrails, rewrite, rerank, judge.
  9. 09State risk and next stepsThe trade-offs you accepted, what would break first, and what you would do next.

4 reference architectures

The four designs that come up again and again, in interviews and in client rooms. Each one is given as a cloud-neutral pattern first, then drawn service by service on AWS and on Azure. Click any card to flip it and see the full diagram.

What you walk away with

Not notes. The six artefacts an architect is actually judged on.

📐

An architecture diagram

The 7-layer blueprint applied to a real brief, with the production control named at every layer.

🧾

Architecture decision records

Why this model, this retrieval strategy, this cloud - written down so it survives you leaving the room.

🎯

SLOs and a cost model

Non-functional requirements turned into numbers, including the hidden calls: guardrails, rewrite, rerank, judge.

🛡️

A threat model

Defence in depth across seven control layers, mapped to the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications.

📖

Runbooks

What you do at 3am when the assistant gives dangerously wrong information - rehearsed, not improvised.

🗣️

A defended design

The nine-step method, practised against timed briefs, until the answer comes out structured.

K21 Academy: The Real Deal for Tech Leaders Transitioning into AI/ML and Cloud

As a VP of Software Engineering making a deliberate career transition into AI/ML and Cloud leadership, I've been extremely selective about where I invest my time and money. Enrolling in K21 Academy's AI/ML/GenAI/Agentic AI Track Program has been one of the best professional decisions I've made this year. Since joining, I've completed four courses - Python, Mastery Gen AI, Agentic AI, and MLOps in AWS - and successfully passed three Microsoft certification exams: AI-900, AZ-900, and AB-731. What sets K21 apart is the depth of knowledge their trainers bring. The hands-on projects on both Azure and AWS gave me practical experience that actually shows up on a resume and in interviews.

K21 Academy gave me clarity and confidence in my AI journey

I joined K21 Academy at a time when I felt stuck and unsure about my career direction. Connecting with Shahid was a turning point. He gave me clarity, practical guidance, and renewed confidence. One of K21 Academy's biggest strengths is its AI curriculum. The content is exhaustive and serves as a one-stop shop for AI and ML. I enrolled in the Full Stack AI program across multiple cloud platforms, and despite the significant time commitment, I haven't regretted it for a single moment.

From non-technical background to confident AI learner

I decided to explore AI as part of a career change, but coming from a non-technical background made me hesitant to enroll in any course. With the encouragement and support of my husband, I joined K21 Academy run by Atul Kumar and I'm really glad I did. The course is well-structured, catering to both beginners and advanced learners. What stands out the most is the thoughtful design of the program and the strong support system provided by the team. The emphasis on hands-on experience truly enhances the learning process.

Before you enroll

No, and that is the point. You will read and draw architecture, not write training loops. The work is choosing between options, naming the trade-off, sizing the cost and defending the decision - which is what the role is actually assessed on. You should be comfortable in a technical conversation; you do not need to be the strongest coder in the room.

Module 1 is vocabulary, and you may move through it quickly. The value starts at Module 2 and 3: the 7-layer blueprint, four reference architectures, and the step-by-step method for turning a blank brief into a defended design. Most engineers who build AI have never had to defend an architecture to a panel, and that is the gap this closes.

6 weeks, with 74 lessons across 8 modules. Each module is mapped to a week so you always know where you should be, and you keep access to everything for a full year.

No. Module 4 starts with the cloud fundamentals AI systems depend on - identity, secrets, private networking, queues, API front door, cache, monitoring. Modules 5 and 6 then go deep on each cloud separately, so you can design on either one and answer ‘AWS or Azure?’ with a reason rather than a preference.

It is the spine of the program. Module 2 covers how to answer a system design question live, Module 3 is the nine-step method applied end to end, and you work through timed practice design briefs. Every reference architecture is given as a pattern first, then drawn on AWS and on Azure, so you can redraw it under pressure.

It is maintained against what is actually shipping. Module 7 covers the AI gateway layer, context engineering, agent memory and sandboxing, agent identity and authorization, inference economics, model tiering and the current compliance timelines. Platform naming is kept current too - Bedrock AgentCore rather than the older Bedrock Agents, and Microsoft Foundry rather than Azure AI Foundry.

LangChain and LangGraph, LlamaIndex, the OpenAI Agents SDK, Microsoft Agent Framework, Strands Agents and CrewAI - with an honest read on where each one fits and where teams outgrow it. On the operations side: OpenTelemetry tracing, evaluation tooling, prompt management, model gateways and index versioning.

AI architect, GenAI solutions architect, agentic AI architect, AI solution architect, AI platform engineer, LLMOps engineer and AI security architect. Architecture postings skew senior - the median experience asked for is around seven years - so this suits people already working in technology rather than complete beginners.

Every lesson, the slide decks, the reference architecture diagrams in all three variants, the practice design briefs, the interview question bank and the model answers. Access runs for a full year.

Upskill is the full program - every module, every reference architecture, the practice briefs and a year of access. Upskill + job preparation adds the career side on top: your resume rebuilt for architect roles, your LinkedIn profile optimised, mock system design interviews with structured feedback, coaching through the question bank, job-search strategy with a monthly job clinic, and on-job support once you are placed.

Yes, on both plans. Upskill is $997 in full or three monthly payments of $397. Upskill + job preparation is $1,997 in full or three monthly payments of $797. Paying in full is the cheaper route on either plan.

Be the one who can defend the design
