This post covers issue encountered during Installing Fusion Middleware Infrastructure for Oracle SOA Suite 12C (This issue/fix is also applicable to any other Fusion Middleware product like WebLogic, WebCenter, OBIEE, ODI etc). If you are new to Oracle SOA 12c or Fusion Middleware then I highly recommend checking Atul’s Post about Oracle SOA/BPM 12c Architecture Every Apps DBA Must Know
Issue Encountered
On Start of Installation of Fusion_Infrastructure, Error reported on screen “Insufficient free space in /tmp/orcl****.tmp to extract the installer. Actual 1000 MB. Required 1504 MB.”
______
[oracle@1712soa12c01 fusion_infra12c]$ /usr/java/jdk1.8.0_71/bin/java -jar -d64 fmw_12.2.1.2.0_infrastructure.jar
Launcher log file is /tmp/OraInstall2017-12-11_06-50-05AM/launcher2017-12-11_06-50-05AM.log.Insufficient free space in /tmp/orcl5927532452798696103.tmp to extract the installer
Actual 1000 MB. Required 1504 MB.

Root Cause
If you look at the error message it is clear that installer is expecting approx 1.5GB whereas if you look at space available on the server in /tmp is 1GB (use df -h /tmp to find space available on a mount)
[oracle@1712soa12c01 fusion_infra12c]$ df -h /tmp/
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
overflow 2000M 24K 1500M 1% /tmp
Fix
You have two options to fix this issue
- Option 1: Increase Space in /tmp
- Option 2: Change temp location used by installer by using option -Djava.io.tmpdir
Check it out: Oracle SOA starts with a simple idea – the concept of Service. Find out more about it here.
Step By Step Instructions to Fix Issue
Step 1. Create another temp directory like /tmp2 and assign correct permission
Step 1.1 Login in as Root
Step 1.2. Create another directory named as tmp2 under root.
[oracle@1712soa12c01 fusion_infra12c]$ su –
Password:
[root@1712soa12c01 ~]# mkdir /tmp2
[root@1712soa12c01 ~]# df -h /tmp2/
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/vg_mastersoa12c-lv_root
50G 22G 25G 47%
So now tmp2 has 25GB space free.
Step 1.3. Make sure Oracle user (user installing SOA Suite) can read, write and execute in this directory. Change the mode of the directory as shown in the image.
[root@1712soa12c01 ~]# chmod 777 /tmp2
Step 2. Start installation using option -Djava.io.tmpdir
[oracle@1712soa12c01 fusion_infra12c]$ /usr/java/jdk1.8.0_71/bin/java -jar -d64 -Djava.io.tmpdir=/tmp2 fmw_12.2.1.2.0_infrastructure.jar
Launcher log file is /tmp2/OraInstall2017-12-11_07-02-52AM/launcher2017-12-11_07-02-52AM.log.
